EDWARDSVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT TAKES A STAND
AGAINST DRUG USE

In an effort to let the students of District 7 know that drugs will not be tolerated in the schools, a police-dog drug search was recently conducted at the Edwardsville High School. Searches like these will continue, according to Dr. Hightower who indicated that more searches like this will be planned for the future.

These searches are part of the Districts Project DrugSMART campaign which kicked off this month. The program is designed to address drug education and awareness, prevention, and strategies and deterrents for maintaining a safe and drug-free environment in schools throughout District 7.

The administration and faculty representatives of District 7 along with local law enforcement officials and members of the health community are working together discussing the current trends in teenage drug use, their impact on the middle schools and high school, and potential solutions. Together, they have developed an action plan that focuses on:

- Education & Awareness

- Student Support

- Deterrence

All educational activities will revolve around high school and middle school students who may find themselves in a compromising position that may lead to experimenting with or using marijuana and/or heroin and misusing prescription drugs. Prevention through education and awareness, student support, and deterrence is the most important step that can be taken to combat this pervasive threat to our kids.
